Controlling Moisture in Masonry
Concrete Masonry is an effective solution for the ever-changing design environment. Protecting the building’s envelope from water penetration is critical to the architect and their design team. Concrete masonry coupled with effective insulation solutions are effective strategies for the ever-changing design environment. Attendees of this one-hour HSW presentation will gain a better understanding of the compliance paths used for meeting the 8th Edition of the 2023 Florida Building Code, regarding mass wall assemblies. In addition, this course reviews the criteria for selecting proper insulation remedies, while addressing air and vapor transmission. Lastly, participants will understand methods and procedures to ensure a more sustainable and resilient building envelope.

Advanced FBC: 8th Edition (2023) Architectural Acoustic Requirements in the Code
This seminar will address Florida Building Code requirements in section 1207 that are applied to acoustical situations in living and dwelling units, i.e. multi-family residences, hotels and similar occupancies.
Part 1 of the session will cover the laboratory and field rating systems for Sound Transmission Class (STC) requirements for demising and corridor walls and floor/ceiling assemblies; and Impact Insulation Class (IIC) requirements for floor/ceiling systems in these buildings specified by the Code will be defined.
Part 2 will allow participants to be able to design and implement acoustical systems and identify potential “pitfalls” that can result in acoustical problems in completed buildings.
Part 3 of the session covers the new section 1211 of the FBC (Buildings) code on enhanced classroom acoustics, including where the code is applicable, what the requirements are, how building systems and finishes can be evaluated for compliance, and compliance procedures during design and post construction testing.

Designing Glazing for Wind-Borne Debris Protection
Wind-borne debris protection is a building code requirement in many coastal areas prone to hurricanes as a means of protecting people and property during a storm. In those areas, impact resistant glazing is part of the window or door system. Failure to protect openings can result in interior damage, business interruption, and potential mold problems. The worst-case scenario is a build-up of internal pressure leading to catastrophic building failure. Industry building codes and standards, including ISO, Miami Dade, ASTM E1886 Test Method and the ASTM E1996 Specification are reviewed in the presentation, including test requirements based on wind zone and type of protection required (basic vs. enhanced).

Advanced FBC 8th Edition (2023): Fair Housing vs. Florida Accessibility Code
Today’s mixed-use buildings require the application of varying codes, particularly with respect to accessibility requirements. While these projects are not, by definition, solely residential, they are often “primarily” so. This course compares Fair Housing regulations with the stricter requirements of the FBC Accessibility with an eye towards when one applies over the other and when both apply.
