Introduction

NOTE! This course teaches the 7th edition of the Florida Building Code, which will be replaced by the 8th Edition on December 31, 2023.

The course provides a detailed overview of what and how an architect should understand the use of the Florida Building Code as a design determinant for mixed-use buildings. The course will also define how architects can combine multiple occupancies compliant with the Florida Building Code.

Description

The course will develop concepts for determining allowable building sizes compliant with height and area regulations, fire separation requirements and potential detailing requirements. The course will address primarily Construction Types III, IV and V type buildings as Types I and II do not provide the complicated code understanding that the more restrictive requirements of III, IV and V Type buildings.

Objective

Have a better understanding of how the Florida Building Code and Fire Prevention Codes effect Mixed-Use Building Design; be able to discern the difference between accessory, incidental and unique occupancies and their effect on Mixed-use Buildings; understand how to effectively present (graphically and verbally) to building departments how the Mixed-use Building is designed and separated; and understand for fire prevention and design considerations - how they effect the design of Mixed-use Buildings.
