This seminar will address the role of the architect in designing safe paths of
travel, and level changes that are ergonomically correct, and code compliant.

NOTE: DVD ORDERS WILL BE SENT ON A FLASH DRIVE INSTEAD OF DVD

Description

The presentation will address the Florida Building Code requirements for stairs,
steps, ramps, and level changes. In addition to the Building code, the Florida Accessibility and ADA requirements will be discussed, as well as the standards of care from the National Floor Safety Institute (NFSI), and the ASTM F-13 Committee on walkway Surfaces and Coefficient of Friction Testing (COF). Participants will examine and comment on good and bad examples of floor treatments, level changes, testing methods for slipperiness (COF), and best practices.

Objective

Understand and apply the Florida Building Code, ADAAG, and FL Accessibility requirements to design code compliant level changes, steps, stairs, ramps, and paths of travel.
Understand the Slip Meter Coefficient of Friction testing methods as determined by NFSI and ASTM F-13.
Analyze good and bad examples of floor treatments and level changes and determine if they are design defects, construction errors, or user error.
