Nicklaus Children's Hospital Advanced Pediatric Care Pavilion

Merit Award of Excellence | Interiors

Designed by Perkins+Will.

The re-envisioning, re-programming, and re-design efforts continued the tower’s design framework of refocusing the patient’s attention towards nature, sunlight and the healing power of a loving family. As a design strategy for healing, principles of Evidence Based Design were included: access to daylight and nature, positive distractions, and ample and diverse opportunities for social interaction for both the recovering child and the family. The Main Lobby reinforces the overarching biophilic design of the tower floors above, utilizing health-supporting materials and abstract references to the local tropical flora. A series of poetically simple, iconic, over scaled, light “petals” create a soothing yet playful lighting feature that mimics a walk under a canopy of trees, aiding with wayfinding. The spacious lobby provides multi-purpose event space for child-focused entertainment, volunteer-organized book readings, clown shows, puppet shows, or just spontaneous play. Built-in niches carved into slatted wood walls invite families to find refuge, space to read or to catch up on work. Other Lobby amenities include a café, gift shop, telephone rooms, reading library, laundry services, and a spa room for patient’s parents. The Lobby design completes the tower’s design goals of reinterpreting a space for healing.
