Moriviví House

Honor Award | Sustainable Design

Moriviví House

Honor Award | Sustainable Design

Designed by Marvel Marchand Architects.

The aim of this proposal is to produce a minimal, affordable, and ecologically-sensitive alternative to existing housing solutions. An expandable ‘starter’ house that could be self-built for $15,000, that would meet & exceed current building codes, and that would incorporate traditional materials and strategies to minimize waste while maximizing the use of natural resources. The result is a simple and accessible structure that, like the Moriviví (sensitive plant), opens its leaves to the sun and closes them when exposed to external stimuli. A home that provides its residents with physical and psychological comfort before, during, and after a natural disaster occurs. The 574 square foot house consists of two principal spaces conjoined by a functional core for the kitchen, bathroom, and infrastructure. Built with repetitive modular units that are light, manageable, and based on standard dimensions helps reduce waste, labor costs, and minimizes the need for specialized equipment and tools. Its narrow footprint and highly permeable facades guarantee maximum light and air circulation throughout, while its orientation limits solar exposure and maximizes exposure towards prevailing northeastern winds. Wood screens with operable storm shutters function as awnings to provide shade, generous amounts of cross-ventilation, and protection when necessary.
