The design is a simple courtyard scheme organized around three landscapes: neighborhood street corner, interior private courtyard, and expansive Sarasota Bay landscape. The neighborhood relationship is expressed by the low, one story guest house set in a mass of drought tolerant grasses. This volume also defines the east side of the interior courtyard and creates privacy from the street. The private courtyard is a narrow landscape surrounded by a simple colonnade. Views from the guest house flow across the courtyard to the Bay. This space creates a simultaneous experience of spatial intimacy and human scale. The west side of the property is defined by a two-story volume over looking the Bay. On the north edge is a discrete, single story den that transitions the scale of the main house down towards the mangrove edge, creating balance between the built and natural environments.
