Baptist MD Anderson Cancer Center

Merit Award of Excellence | New Work

Designed by HKS and FreemanWhite.

The new cancer center represents a transformation in the Northeast Florida health care landscape, re-imagining how cancer care is provided to patients in and around the region through multi-disciplinary, highly-coordinated care. Collaborating to construct the ideal patient experience, innovative teams delivered a trailblazing structure that serves the full continuum of cancer care needs, from screening and diagnosis to treatment and survivorship. As a key design driver, the center strives for flexible, smart and innovative solutions throughout. The building addresses the need for a hospital in this region to mimic the landscape of the city. Through the application of the open central courtyard the design seeks to break down the building into a more familiar scale. The central courtyard works as an anchor to this building by creating an internal focus for the patient and providing a meditative space for interaction between the patient and the community. The vertical circulation through the tower creates an experience similar to the healing process of the patient. The patient experiences an internally focused and intimate connection through the central courtyard. The view of the courtyard is a reminder as they move through the tower, gradually fading and re-orienting the patient to an external, expansive view of the city.
