La Arquitectura de La Habana Republicana 1902 -1940

By Raúl L. Rodríguez, AIA

When in 1925, for his “ill or good fortune”, Carlos Miguel de Céspedes was named Secretary of Public Works, he envisioned La Habana as a city that would rival any city in Europe or América. Seeking an architect who could collaborate with Cuban architects in this effort, Céspedes wrote the Minister of Fine Arts in France asking him to recommend an individual and a reading list. Jean-Claude Nicolas Forestier, a French landscape architect under contract to the city of Paris was invited to La Habana.

Under Céspedes and Forestier what followed was a public works plan of unprecedented proportions which sought to combine classical built forms with a natural tropical environment.  The plan included new or improved projects for:  El Parque Central, El  Parque de la Fraternidad, El Paseo del Prado, La Avenida de Las Misiones,  La Avenida del Puerto,  La Universidad de la Habana, La Plaza Cívica and El Capitolio Nacional.

Raúl L. Rodríguez, AIA and Carlos Alberto Fleitas, two Cuban born, American educated architects collaborated in preparing this presentation which chronicles the architecture of La Habana from its colonial precedents through the neo-classical aspirations of the young republic.
