“Evidence Based Design in the NICU Environment"

In the past several years, there has been an explosion of activity within the healthcare community surrounding evidence based design, which is defined by the Center for Health Design as the “process of basing decisions about the built environment t on credible research to achieve the best possible outcomes (CHD 2008)”. A growing body of research evidence demonstrates that environmental conditions, such as lighting quality, acoustics, and privacy affect the well-being of patients, family members and staff (Ulrich et al. 2009). Perhaps nowhere in the healthcare environment is this more important than in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) where fragile infants fight for survival. In response to the increasingly apparent need for developmentally appropriate environments, a growing number of hospitals are constructing single family rooms in the NICU. These environments are purported to reduce infections, increase privacy, and support parent bonding, kangaroo care, and breast-feeding. During this session, the presenter(s) will share information regarding the field of evidence-based design in general, with a specific focus on research involving NICU environments. Specific examples will be provided.
